Segundo a Polícia Militar Rodoviária (PMRv), um ônibus atropelou a capivara. Imediatamente, o motorista do veículo desceu na rodovia junto com o guia para tentar remover o animal e não causar mais acidentes.

No entanto, o carro que vinha atrás não conseguiu parar, bateu na capivara e, em seguida, atropelou o guia e o motorista do ônibus.

O motorista ficou gravemente ferido, foi socorrido e levado ao Hospital Municipal Doutor Mário Gatti em Campinas. Já o guia turístico morreu no local.

O condutor do carro que atingiu as vítimas teve apenas ferimentos leves.

O motorista contou à polícia que a viagem duraria quatro dias. O coletivo havia saído de Caxias no Maranhão e seguia para São Paulo. Por isso, o ônibus viajava com dois condutores e o guia turístico. O outro motorista e os dez passageiros que estavam no ônibus não ficaram feridos.

O carro ficou destruído e a perícia realizou os trabalhos necessários no local do acidente.
